Common Symptoms of a Toothache

There are some very common symptoms relating to a toothache.

One of the most common ones is severe pain in the teeth and gums. This pain can feel like a sharp pain, for example when you eat food, or a persistent dull ache. A toothache can also take the shape of general teeth sensitivity, such as the inability to eat cold or hot food.

Swollen gums is also a common symptom of a toothache. Most common in dental problems such as periodontal disease and gingivitis, swollen gum tissue is very uncomfortable and painful.

Causes of Dental Pain

At Kensington Dental Care you will first undergo a series of tests to understand your toothache. Once we have determined this, we will then provide the appropriate treatment to alleviate the pain. This could include restoring any unhealthy tooth structure, replacing old fillings, root canal treatment, or extraction.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is damage to a tooth that can occur when decay causing bacteria in your mouth produce acids that attack the tooth’s surface. This may result in a cavity, or small hole, in the tooth. Without treatment, tooth decay can result in pain, infection, and even tooth loss.

Gum Disease

Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease which is caused by a build-up of plaque along your gum line and can be removed by our Oral Health Therapists. Periodontal disease is a more severe form of gum disease and may require more serious treatment or surgery.

Dental Trauma

Dental fractures can be caused by an acute accident but can also be a result of subconsciously grinding teeth during your sleep.

Tooth Abscess

A tooth abscess occurs if  dental damage is left untreated and results in an infection. If left untreated, it can affect the tooth’s nerve endings or bone surrounding the tooth and serious treatment such as a root canal or extraction may be needed on the abscessed tooth.

At Kensington Dental Care, we are a team of experts that offer treatments on all your dental needs from your tooth pain from early stage gum disease to all tooth decay stages and even a wisdom tooth abscess.

Pain Relief Options for Toothaches

Tooth ache pain relief consultation

There are some temporary relief options you can use until you can seek treatment from your dentist.

In the short-term, a cold compress to the jaw or over the counter anti-inflammatories to reduce swelling may provide tooth pain relief.  There are also over the counter anaesthetics, which provide a numbing sensation to the affected area.

If you’re lucky toothaches may subside after a day or two, however this does not necessarily mean the tooth is healthy. It may indicate the tooth has undergone a short-term change in the inflammation cycle and it is only a matter of time before the ache returns.

Remember, toothache relief home remedies are a temporary solution, so it is important to visit the dentist and get treatment when you notice any pain in your mouth.

How To Prevent Toothaches

The best way to prevent the causes behind toothaches, such as dental infections and dental decay, is to maintain good oral hygiene practices.

Brushing your teeth every day, using dental floss and fluoride toothpaste will help keep your teeth and gums healthy and help avoid any serious treatments.

It is also important to have regular dental checkups and see your dentist immediately if you have tooth pain that lasts more than a day, frequent tooth sensitivity or happen to accidentally experience a cracked tooth.

We maintain the highest standards and are devoted to restoring and enhancing your smile with state of the art treatments that are reliable and comfortable.
